Instructions
Introduction
Eukaryotic pathogens are highly diverse and have much more complex life cycles than prokaryotes. This lab assignment will describe the major classes of eukaryotic pathogens and dive into some of the diseases they cause.
This assignment is meant to help you take away the big picture from each of the pathogen groups we explore. I’m less concerned with you memorizing different organisms or lifecycle stages and more concerned that you understand the differences between the classes of eukaryotic pathogens, the general features of each classification, why it’s clinically relevant that many eukaryotes have such complex lifecycles and how this impacts diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Learning Outcomes/Goals
After working through these activities, you will be able to:
- Discuss the concept of neglected diseases and their societal impacts.
- Describe the neglected protozoan and helminthic diseases discussed here.
- Analyze the reasons for the of these extremely prevalent NTD's and some methods for eradication.
Instructions:
Please read through the information provided and answer each question to the best of your ability. For short response/essay questions, be sure to respond to the entire question, but be succinct.
- You are welcome to work with classmates though remember your submission should be in your own words.
- There is a lot of reading in this lab. I tried my best to add in relevant video options!
Feel free to take breaks and come back to this Canvas assignment if you need to! Be sure to keep your browser tab with the quiz open-- I've heard from students if they exit out, Canvas doesn't always save their work.
Estimated time to completion 1.5 - 3 hours
Grading Details:
- The multiple choice questions will grade automatically and are just for practice (these are the kind of questions you might see on the lab exam). As long as you've answered them all, you will get full credit for them on this assignment. (it's a good idea for you to check how you did on them even if they aren't for a grade, they might be later!)
- Canvas can't grade your free response answers, so I will need to grade your free response answers before your grade is entered into the grade book.
