Exergonic

Exergonic means a reaction that releases energy.

In simple terms:

  • "Ex-" means out

  • "Ergon" means energy or work

  • So, exergonic = energy goes out

Example:

  • Burning sugar (like glucose) in the body is exergonic because it releases energy your body can use.

  • Cellular respiration is a common exergonic process.

Key point:

  • Exergonic reactions usually happen spontaneously (on their own).

  • They have a negative ΔG (change in free energy), meaning the products have less energy than the reactants.

✅ So, if energy is released = exergonic reaction.
