Neglected Tropical Diseases: Pathogen Classifications
There are NTDs caused by the three different overarching pathogen groups you've learned a bit about so far.
- Viruses: Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, Rabies and many others
- Bacteria (Prokaryotes): Trachoma (causes blindness), leprosy, enteric bacteria (cholera, Shiglella, Salmonella) and many others.
- Eukaryotic Pathogens
- Fungal Infections: chromoblastomycosis, mycetoma and others
- Protozoa (i.e. Leishmaniasis, malaria, Chagas Disease and African Sleeping Sickness)
- Helminths (Worms)... Filariasis, Schistosomiasis, Tapeworms, and many, many other NTDs in this category!
Review the difference between viruses, prokaryotes and eukaryotes: Draw and label a virus, a prokaryotic cell and an eukaryotic cell. Be sure to identify and label the major components of each type of pathogen. You should include enough detail and text in your drawing to cover major differences between these three classes. You can refer to Google, your lecture notes, or OpenStax Microbiology to help you out. (This should also help you review lecture content too!)
